Different Styles of Hearing Aids
There are several different styles of hearing instruments, not to mention the multiple design and color options. Each hearing instrument is designed and fitted to each personÂ’s hearing needs.
The place where hearing instruments are worn is the simplest way of categorizing the different types. Basically, hearing instruments are worn in the ear, or behind the ear.
- Custom hearing instruments worn in the ear, and must be custom fit for each person.
- BTE is the abbreviation for "behind-the-ear".
Custom:
Custom hearing instruments are appropriate for mild to severe hearing loss. Custom instruments sit entirely within the ear and are fitted individually based on an impression of the wearer's ear. The picture below illustrates the range of styles from the Micro-CIC instrument, which fits completely in the canal to the full-shell hearing instrument, called ITE.
Behind-the-ear (BTE) :
BTE's are used for all types of hearing loss from mild to profound. They are sometimes easier to handle since they are larger than custom instruments. Today's BTE's however, can still be very inconspicous. They come in a variety of styles including miniature BTE's to super power BTE's.
Traditional BTE's require a custom fit earmold to couple the instrument to the ear and direct the sound into the ear canal. This earmold helps to hold the instrument in place and can help provide the best acoustics depending on the hearing loss.
Behind-the-ear (BTE) – open fitting:
Life BTE's are a type of open-fitting BTE's. Unlike traditional BTE's, they do not require a custom earmold. Life instruments are small, stylish, and provide a natural sound without the occluding sensation sometimes experienced with more traditional BTE's. Because of their size and open fit style, they are only suitable for more mild hearing losses.
Receiver-in-canal (RIC):
RIC hearing instruments look similar to Life instruments, but the hearing aid receiver is external to the instrument and is placed into the ear canal. This external placement of the receiver allows the RIC BTE to be as small as possible, making it extremely discreet and lightweight.
Charger:
Several Siemens hearing instruments are rechargeable, so you don't have to worry about changing batteries in the middle of a meeting or during dinner with friends. Simply place the instruments in the stylish, easy-to-use charger up to two instruments at a time. After just five hours of charging, the instruments are ready to go all day. For even greater convenience, these rechargeable instruments also run on regular hearing instrument batteries.
